Working from designs from Populous Architects, Bennett Architectural were commissioned by main contractor Laing O’Rourke on an ambitious project to transform the south stand of Manchester City FC’s Etihad Stadium.

The plan was to improve what is already a recognisable landmark across the skyline of Manchester, and compliment the increased capacity of the ground from 48,000 to 54,000.

Bennett Architectural installed partially glazed façades as well as Kawneer’s AA110 curtain walling with the challenge to replicate the design of other areas of the ground.

Particular considerations were given to the increased deflections and movement associated with a stadium construction and increased crowd loadings to the system and the glazing.

Rob Bennett, Sales Director at Bennett Architectural commented,

“One of the challenges of working on a live site which houses 48,000 every week, was to cause minimum disruption whilst ensuring we delivered a quality service and efficient products.

“The Etihad Stadium is one of the stand out buildings in the entire North West of England, and we were delighted to work on it.”

Tom Glick, Chief Commercial Officer for Manchester City FC added,

“The expansion of the stadium was a hugely significant moment for City.”
