Bennett Architectural were appointed by VINCI Construction to provide a full vertical envelope façade system for New Covent Garden Market.
New Covent Garden Market is the UK’s largest fruit, vegetable and flower wholesaler and required a façade constructed from Kawneer’s AA110 curtain wall as part of its redevelopment.
The façade requirements were driven primarily by the necessity for a high acoustic performance due to the site being located close to a primary railway line.
This was then followed by the thermal performance requirement which was also high due to large glass panels allowing in plenty of natural light.
Along with the high performance clear glazing, there were unique opaque heat-strengthened laminate ‘Vanceva’ panels which included integrated green interlayers. Additionally, there were also large sinusoidal acoustic panels.
Lionel Grant, Managing Director at Bennett Architectural commented,
“Two of the big challenges on New Covent Garden Market were meeting the thermal and solar gains presented, meeting these requirements aided the client in achieving the overall performance of the structure”.
“The curtain wall also needed to accommodate significant deflection in the super structure due to large span cantilevered slabs.
“It’s a credit to everyone involved that what was considered quite an industrial looking product has been modernised, which was essential given its location in central London.”
