Here’s our latest Day in the Life feature from Abi Stubbins from our Purchasing team.

Tell us 3 words to describe your job?

Stimulating, Eventful, Challenging.

What can you remember about your first day/week at Bennetts?

I was quite apprehensive, but also very excited on my first day. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I can remember standing in reception feeling so many mixed emotions, but as soon as I was introduced to everybody I felt so welcome, everybody was so friendly which instantly put me at ease.

What is a typical day in Purchasing?

There is no typical day as a purchaser, each day is full of exciting new tasks and different challenges.

How would you describe your job to a stranger?

As a purchaser, my role involves buying the goods and services that enable an organisation to operate.

We are responsible for sourcing materials from suppliers all over the UK and worldwide, bringing them into the organisation to enable the production of goods, and arranging direct site deliveries which are required for project implementation.

We have a basic objective to maintain the ‘five rights’ of procurement which involve buying the materials with the right quality, at the right price, ensuring the right quantity is procured, and arranging for the goods to be delivered at the right place and at the right time.

We have an active role in monitoring Bennett’s supply chain by ensuring suppliers adhere to environmental aspects, they are in keeping with current legislation, as well as maintaining existing requirements of each project. As a procurement team, we ensure compliance with purchasing best practices and existing business policies and procedures.

What’s the biggest challenge in your job?

The biggest challenge is meeting programme dates on short lead times. Sometimes purchasing can be faced with the impossible, but in most instances, as a team we will always find a solution together.

Tell us what you’re working on at the moment?

I’m currently procuring pressings, brackets, panels and extruded items for the current contractual projects. Ensuring the deliveries are being made on time and analysing the performance of the pressing suppliers.

What has been your crowning achievement/s to date at Bennetts?

My biggest achievement is starting a CIPS Diploma level 4 course. The knowledge and experience is helping me to utilise the skills into developing my job role further. The CIPS training has already demonstrated effective results and improved efficiency by bringing best practice and innovative thinking to the workplace.
